These photos are their piece and in every piece, it represents their selves. Hence, if someone stole their piece, then they have stolen the identity and personality of the artist as well. That might be the reason why photographers and graphic designers especially the professionals tend to be worried about their piece uploaded on-line to be stolen by someone else and use it for something without having any compensation at the artist’s end. Here are some tips on how to protect your images on the Internet from potential thieves.

Use visible Watermark

A watermark is actually an image, text or pattern that is overlayed in an image. The overlayed image is at low opacity for it to appear transparent but still visible and recognizable. You can add watermark at your image using photo editing software like Adobe Photoshop or Picasa. This might deteriorate the quality of the image but this will make the potential thieves think twice to copy your image for they will edit the picture first and take a lot of time editing before they use it somewhere else.

Disable right click menu

Basically, we just download images from the internet by doing “right mouse click” then “save image as” depending on the browser that you are using, this has been made possible because the developer have activated or enabled the “Context Menu” or the “right mouse click feature” of the page. For your image not to be copied that way, you must disable the “right mouse click” feature. Developers use script (usually Java) to block right clicks. This trick might not work to the experts for they know the weakness of the script but this will stop the novice users to copy the images directly that you have posted using “right click”.

Use Flash

Aside from Flash’s interactivity to audience and amazing animation features, utilizing flash for web would also be a great help in protecting your images. Flash disallows the audience to copy and paste any content from the page. Some developers do allow it, but only few. This trick is quite effective to those who are novice. Although the users can make use of the print screen feature of the computer, then crop it, but this takes time and may decrease the quality of the image thus making the potential thieves think twice to use the obtained image.

Shrink wrapping

Shrink wrapping is just like putting a film covering to something. For online images, you are actually placing a transparent .gif file like a film to the image that you are protecting and as a result, when the potential thieves copy the picture using “right mouse click” they will not notice that the object that they have downloaded is a blank image. Although the users can use print screen and have a screen shoot of your picture then crop but this will deteriorate the quality of the image and takes time to edit.

Image Slicing

Literally, this technique actually implies to slice the picture. You will post your sliced photo using a table with 0 cell padding and 0 cell spacing. The number of cell must also equate to the number of slices of your photo. Using this technique, the photo that you have posted will appear as a complete and unsliced image, but if the audience will try to download the image using context menu or the “right mouse click”, they would only get a part of that photo. A sliced image posted in a site will look perfectly complete.

Upload low resolution images

Higher resolution images encourage users to steal your images. When you post images online it would be better for you to upload them at low resolution. Resizing image can be done using a photo editing software like Adobe Photoshop, Picasa, and Corel. The audience will not be tempted to download you images because this will just ruin their project and will not be able to use it for high quality projects. I found this effective for both novices and experts.

Conclusion

Don’t upload your images online if you want to be 100 per cent sure. No matter how you protect your images online, the risk for theft is still enormous. Your images are viewed worldwide and you can’t image how many people around the globe want to have your hard worked images without providing any compensation or even credits.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2414437688568954611.post-17899756765012920642011-05-26T07:55:00.000-07:002011-05-26T08:03:49.904-07:0020 Reasons Why Your Website Design Sucks Part 1
We all have or have heard about those clients from hell, those that really love pink pages with red text. Even worse, what about those people who call themselves “web designers” with expensive prices and services listed on their really messy, horrible and amateur portfolios, just because they made their uncle’s business page and they liked it.

Unfortunately, many people believe that web design is all about personal style and smart IDE’s with pre-built buttons. Let me tell you something – they are wrong. I love to play football, but that doesn’t make me a professional player, and Dreamweaver does not make you a professional web developer. Web Design and development demands knowledge, practice, daily effort to learn and study, and passion, like professional football players.

(Design conventions: Necessary guidelines in order to improve a specific design.)

No matter how good or bad personal style is, the truth is that everyone has one. However, when design conventions are left out of a project, the result will be a bad or uninteresting design. That is exactly what happens with those terrible clients, when they try to implement their personal style without knowing anything about design conventions.

1) Balance

Balance is a basic principle in design. It is directly connected to every element, and helps you control the design flow of your page. There are two important concepts in balance – symmetrical and asymmetrical balance. With Symmetrical Balance, elements have equal weight on both sides, leading to a formal and traditional web site, however, with asymmetrical balance, elements have a different weight which leads to a different and unique layout.

I decided to include this topic because its importance is major in layout design. If incorrectly used, it can lead to the total ruin of your layout.

Above is a good example of asymmetrical balance. Did you notice the “DECO Windshield Repair” text on the right, and the background map image on the left? Although those elements do not have the same weight, it feels perfectly balanced. However, if you hide the text on the right, the page will lose its balance very quickly. Now take a look at the white bottom section, those three columns don’t have the same weight, but it’s perfectly balanced because the left text (“You can’t be everywhere…”) has equal weight as the top right text on the red background.

The result is a “cross balance”, meaning that the weaker and strong elements create a balance between them. I consider this to be of huge importance in asymmetric balance.

The website above fails in so many ways that I could use it as example in the remaining nine topics below, but let’s stay focused on this one. Do you feel the balance? Yes, you are correct, there is no balance. The left side has plenty of images plus a video of the person standing, which results in the left side having more weight than the image on the right.

2) Bevel and Emboss

I had to include this one. It’s really annoying to see the misuse of this layer style. For those who are starting, I understand that you think bevel and emboss is a nice effect and it should be everywhere on your page, but it’s not. Bevel effects should be used sparingly. There are plenty of tutorials on how to transform bevel and emboss into a powerful technique, but if you don’t know how to use it, don’t use it at all.

3) Distracting Backgrounds

Implementing a busy background distracts the user’s attention, hides important information, and disrespects visual hierarchy. If your background image has a higher visual impact than everything else, users won’t catch the message of your website and will leave quickly.

John Kavanagh’s website makes good use of background images, respecting visual hierarchy and also content information. Reading is left to right, and in this case, the user’s attention follows the buildings on the left towards the Eiffel Tower and London Bridge on the right, consequently leading to navigation (which is not visible in the image). This is a perfect example of how background can be used as a “tool” for design flow.

Above is a perfect example of what not to do with your background.

4) Lack of Detail

If your website sucks, it’s probably because you didn’t care about the minor things. When you think your design is complete, you need to start from the beginning and try to apply detail on every single element. As soon as you finish with detail, you need to start again and consider where it can be improved. A single stroke, light effect, or shadow makes the difference between a good and a great design.

Blackberry’s website is a good example of what you can achieve by spending time with details.

Detail, detail, detail.

For a company with the size and impact of Microsoft, their website is far from great. It’s definitely a good example of lack of attention and detail.

5) White Space

White space refers to the space between elements, and it does have nothing to do with the color. If you don’t know what I am talking about, stop your design projects and read about this subject – How to Actually Use Negative Space As Design Element. White space defines the space/distance between your site elements, providing good readability, focus, and design flow. It also gives your website a clean and professional look. Clean layout is not the same as minimalist, think about clean as the opposite of cluttered where content is all over the place.

One other thing you should consider is to use the same height between elements, so if you have three divs vertically aligned, and the middle div is 50px from the top div, it should also be 50px from the bottom div. This is not mandatory, but helps you achieve a good balance between elements.

Uberspace’s website makes good use of white-space.

Just looking at the image above, gives me a headache. The quantity of information is overwhelming, but the way it is displayed is even worse. Cluttered information makes the user feel lost and unhappy. Avoid it!

6) Flash Intros

Once upon a time, having a flash intro in your website would make you a web design ninja. There are plenty of great intros out there, and plenty more of really bad attempts. Nowadays, most visitors want quick access to information and when you demand them to wait, they leave. If you want an intro in your website, make sure it has a point, it adds value and that it is well made.

7) Music

So I have my headphones on, I open several tabs, and suddenly I jump from the chair because irritating music starts playing. I then search for the correct tab and when I find it, I search for the mute button and guess what, there isn’t one. I don’t want to mute my speakers so I close the page and I won’t return to that loud place. Loud and boring music coming from your website is really annoying, but not having a way to shut it down, is an exit ticket from your website.

8) Tables

This is a controversial topic, some people defend the use of tables and others not so much. This topic is not meant to convince you not to use tables, but to use tables when and where you should. Personally, I do not remember the last time I’ve used tables, I simply don’t like it. However, for tabular data, tables are the best choice, since it increases readability and organization.

Shopify’s pricing page is a good example of how great the use of tables can be for tabular data.

Never use tables to style your layout!

9) Colors

The wrong choice of colors can ruin an entire website. Contrast, saturation, types of colors, target audience, style, etc. There are many factors you need to consider when choosing the right colors for your website. If you don’t know where to start, Tina wrote a great article about this subject – Colors in Web Design: Choosing a right combination for your Website. Using too many bright colors, or a similar contrast for your background and foreground elements, or even warm colors along with cool colors, you are basically forcing your visitors to leave.

Color needs to fit perfectly, according to your target audience, style and personality.

If you enter the website above, please be sure to use sunglasses.

10) Overflow

Unless you’re building a website with horizontal layout, showing a horizontal scroll bar is a mistake and looks bad. Make sure your layout is optimized for a resolution of 1024 x 768 pixels, this way 98% of your visitors will be able to visit your website without problems. If you really want to use a bigger background image, be sure you hide the horizontal scroll bar, using the CSS property overflow-x: hidden.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2414437688568954611.post-51501112009211693272011-05-26T07:46:00.000-07:002011-05-26T07:47:42.288-07:00Create An Elegant Vehicles Web Layout With Light Effects
In this tutorial I will teach you how to create an elegant vehicles web layout with a light effect using Photoshop. Here is a short guide that can be followed by all professionals seeking advice on building a portfolio, especially creatives and freelancers.

How to showcase portfolio?
A digital, online portfolio is a must these days, especially if you are preparing for an online job hunt. Most employers are busy and they find it easier to view samples of your work online. Another reason to have an online display of your work is the fact that some people may search through potential employees on portfolio sites, so an online portfolio is mandatory in order to get your face out there. However there still is a great number of employers who agree that traditional portfolios are the best way to go. It’s your decision to make if you want a traditional or a digital portfolio, but the best choice would be to be prepared and use them both.

What should I include in portfolio?

Besides the obvious, significant samples of your work, you should make sure that you include a resume, any awards if it’s the case and business cards. Offering a business card is a respectful gesture, so when you meet a potential employer, make sure to have one within your reach. It is like a resume in miniature size and you shouldn’t overlook it. It should contain information about you, and convey a sense of your personality and your professional aspirations. It might be a good idea to also bring up your sketchbook, It’s very important for some employers to see your train of thought behind a design and how you bring it all together, so they can have a better understanding of you.

As for the samples of the work, be careful and don’t overdo it. Quality over quantity. Few good ideas are enough to prove that you’re good enough for the job, instead of choosing to include tons of mediocre ideas. Display only your best work, that you trust that it will get the job done. Remember that your portfolio is only as strong as your weakest piece. It may be a good idea to put your strongest pieces in the front of it, it’s highly probable that the employer will make up his mind and be sure of your abilities within the first 5-6 projects he sees. So start strong and also, finish with something memorable and interesting, that might easily start a conversation.

When can I consider portfolio finished?

A portfolio is a work in progress and will never be finished, as you will always create new projects. So you should periodically consider updating it, in order to reflect your progress. New pieces will be added, old ones will be taken out. Keep in mind that the digital versions must be updated as well. Try to keep up to date with the latest technology, software etc. to prove that you are professional enough to care for all the details.

Ctrl + Spasi + Klik / Ctrl + Spasi + Alt + Klik
Digunakan untuk membesarkan/mengecilkan tampilan secara bertahap.

Ctrl + “+” / Ctrl + “-”
Digunakan untuk membesarkan/mengecilkan tampilan.

Ctrl + 0
Digunakan untuk melihat tampilan gambar 100%.

F

Tips :
Drag layer yang ingin anda duplikasikan ke icon Create a new layer untuk menduplikasikan layer dengan cepat.

Jalankan Filter > Extract.

Selesai.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2414437688568954611.post-81288485057696837402011-05-25T05:30:00.000-07:002011-05-25T05:32:59.882-07:00Graphic Design Business: Making and Promoting a Portfolio

Creating Portfolio in the Form of PDF

Creating portfolio in the form of PDF is becoming more and more popular since multiple pages, images can be sent together in one piece and the result is a brochure like file which looks professional.

Benefits:

It’s easy to e mail.

You don’t have to worry about the systems and browsing issues, you can actually represent it the way you have made it.

The PDF depicts a well knitted layout and creates an automatic balance.

It can be printed with proper and uniform results.

It’s quick and free of cost to develop.

Drawbacks:

It’s completely dependable on the user wither to open it or save it.

You cannot show your web design projects in it.

The Classic Portfolio

This is in the form of small booklet and actual printed form. In today’s digital world this still looks nice and appealing. Several ways can be developed to develop the hard copy, either putting in prints in a pre made booklet or designing your own custom designed booklet.

Benefits:

Shoes your work in its actual printed form and format, it’s a hard copy of your work

Due to this reason the clients can consult it or look at it several times whenever needed, he doesn’t really have to open his computer every time.

Since it’s tangible, it can be given away to show it to others.

It can be placed on anyone’s working table and if it has a dynamic beautiful graphics, it increases the value of the table and anyone walking in or passing byy can actually have a look at it.

No computer required, can be brought in any time anywhere.

Drawbacks:

It can only be delivered by post and not thorough e mail. Else can be delivered in person.

If you don’t have several copies of it, you leave it with a client and you have nothing left.

If the printing is not upto the standard, it can destroy your very well worked and excellent graphics.

Making several copies of it can be very expensive.

After the portfolio comes the step how to promote it

Ways to Promote Your Business

Word of Mouth

This is the oldest and most effective way of publicity. It always feels good when someone says “have you heard of that person who has designed my logo and stationer, He’s really good.” This might seem very good but actually even this needs reminders to people. This can be done in several ways, quarterly newsletters or press ads would work. Even small flyers can be a good option.

Design a Business Card

This is the most organized way. Giving your personal visiting card to potential clients helps you gain popularity instead of giving your contact information by writing down on some piece of paper which later might be lost. More powerful your card is, more chances of getting work. Few business cards are so well designed that even if the client does not intend to give you work, he would just keep it with him because it’s beautiful, but later some time he would definitely consult it to give you work.

Credit Line

When you work for somebody he or she will definitely promote you to his or her clients through word of mouth. But isn’t it too cool that you get through that person’s clients yourself. There is no harm in it since you are not violating anyone’s rights. It’s just you are getting the credit for your work yourself instead of involving any third person.

Get a Blog

Creating your website isn’t enough. Try making a social network where people can directly approach your portfolio and can comment on it. In this way your publicity will get social.

Along with this learn to organize your work by keeping them up to date. Use softwares to keep backups, use time tracking softwares to see how fast you can work. Meet deadlines yourself. You must organize your work in the most manageable way in order to use it for future references.

Dealing with the clients might not be as easy as it appears. But it’s important to know what to talk to clients when you meet them. Ask them

Who is the target audience

What is the message of the campaign

What is their brand identity

What are the designed items required and their specifications

What is the budget of the client

Is there any deadline for the project

Does he already have any references

Does he prefer certain colors or fonts

You must decide on the contract first, either you take a certain amount of initial advance payment or a token amount just to assure that he doesn’t run away after getting you hooked up by making several options. If you are using stock images make sure you have the copyrights or buy the images. Never cheat, never borrow or copy the images. Decide on the concept first, then work accordingly in schedule given by client. Make sure you work on the images and backgrounds so that they can be produced in high resolution later for artwork.

Web Design Portfolios for Your Inspiration

This insight may not work well in most of the cases. Advertising is far more creative and thought provoking involving lot of ideas and concept than it is yhought so. So much thoguth process, brain washing sessions and conceptual develpoment is involved that a layman might take it just as playing with the imagery, but in real sense it is not as easy.

As for the information, idea generation is always done after finalising the concept. The concept is a very vast thought, mostly generalized and a vague insight. According to the concept the idea genaration takes place. E.g. if you are advertising about a digital colored printing press, the concepts can vary from colorful life or adding color to your life or make the living more coloreful, the idea genartaion would include producing different images supporting the concept. The imagery might include colors of spring or coloring the skies or mixing of colors in the environemnt. More directly just showing the colors in a palette would not be any creative.

This image shows that an already existing parrot full of colors is still taking its colors from DiGiC (ofcourse digitally). Similarly in the same layout, the imagery can be changed e.g. instead of parrot any other living thing, any animal or flower.

In order to produce more creative ideas, it’s important to research and have brain storming sessions. Research should not be done haphazardly, rather deciding on the concept you must go through other campaigns already developed on the same concept. See how they have used images/photographs, what is the composition? What is your tag line. Supporting the concept is the rag line, it can be vice versa also. Either you decide the tag line first and then place a concept over it, or decide the concept and then place a tag line supporting it. More of the work can be done just by choosing the words. As a designer, it’s then upto you what images or ideas you are choosing. Just by lifting the images from somewhere is not what we are talking about. More than the issue of copyrights, it’s the sense of your own creativity which should come in. You can take reference from certain imagery but definitely just for an idea. And why do you want to take reference. Let your brain decide for itself what kind of idea generation you want. Research work may include making a concept model.

Now What is a Concept Model?

Concept model is a real, actual placement of your concept i.e. any 3D model or any 2D diagram on the paper or use of any real material. Concept is just a vague unclear perception in mind. It has to be subjected in real sense, visible, audible or tangible. In order to give your concept this shape, you must create a concept model. E.g. transformation is one concept, very generalized, very vague. How do you take your concept in visible form might be a 3D model including a cloth whose color changes from yellow to orange to red. Is this your idea of transformation: change of colors on a flowing cloth, or maybe you can be more scientific. An egg into a pupa and larva and then a butterfly. But what is the nature of your brand for which you are deciding this? A company providing business opportunities to you says “We transform your life?” now for this matter you need to have a completely different imagery. A kid, shabby looking, worn out clothes, becomes a youngster who sees the bright star of the company and in the third phase a satisfied contented lavishly seated old person. Now this is one idea supporting the concept of transformation in relation to the brand identity.

Another way of showing transformation in relation to the brand reinforced is showing this boy turning into a fiery dragon, from an ordinary boy to a powerful, hot, energetic dragon. But why is it shown this way? A series of drawings by many artists on the topic of “Grow your dragon” show various concepts. This one shows the inner strength of the boy which is growing in the form of dragon, thus transforming. Here comes the view of “Archetypes”. How you give an indirect meaning to your imagery.

Another very simple form of concept of transformation. A furniture designing company shows how we can transform your ordinary wooden table into a royal gold extravagant beauty.

Let’s now discuss some of the points which should be kept in mind while researching for the sake of idea generation. Your research should include determining the brand positioning, competition in the market, target audience, which technique of making graphics would be more suitable: vector based, image based or photography and what designed items will be most appropriate for a certain campaign.

Brand Positioning

In advertising, positioning is the process by which marketers try to create an image or identity in the minds of their target market for its product, brand, or organization.

That very identity will help you decide the concept of your campaign

A very simple Mcdonalds ad reinforcing the essence of coffee. Wake up with our coffee, energize yourself, you have sunken down, you need to charge yourself. Wind the key and charge yourself. This is direct imagery used to show positioning of Mcdonalds coffee.

Competition in the Market

Many times it’s important to know what other competitive brands are doing in the market. You need to develop the campaign more creative and brighter than them. E.g there is a pitched battle between producers of Maggi seasoning and Knorr seasoning. Maggi wroks on more promotional activities, on the other hand Knorr tries to outwit Maggi on the basis of creative advertising.

Maggi endorses its brand by keeping a competition named as “Cook for Mama”. Everyone participates to win the reward. This promotional activity leads to delivering to the minds that Maggi is special. On the other hand

Knorr plays with the direct essence. Good food for you, Garlic savories, beautify yourself with garlic sauces. Research shows that Maggi is still more popular, maybe because of their marketing strategies or maybe continued reinforcement of brand is the best way to reach to people.

Target Audience

In marketing and advertising, a target audience, is a specific group of people within the target market at which the marketing message is aimed at (Kothler 2001). E.g. if the company is aiming to sell new textured wallpapers and wall coatings, target market would definitely be A class of people who can afford the price and should have good taste of interiors. Also architects and builders who can refer the new material after going through all the practical aspects of durability and long lasting finishing. Obviously not kids or teenagers who can never be indulged in house building.

Red Bull mainly targets its audience who are youngsters, mostly teenagers. This is the reason in this ad it shows a young boy.

This ad captures the energy and exuberance of children for the Spring/Summer 2010 Company Kids campaign. Thus target audience being kids.

Technique of Making Graphics

Right kind of graphics support the right concept. For a certain campaign, whether photographs should be used or vector based graphics or an image. This question can be answered simply by seeing other campaigns of the sort. You need to be different, so use the graphics best collaborated with your brand identity and different from competitors. E.g. for Sony Playstation 3, the campaign must have genuine quality of illustrations or dynamic images showing power and brilliant 4 D aspects.

These images very well indicate the laser power which is dynamic and 3D or 4D.

Similarly any designer garments campaign would definitely use photography in order to show the cuts and flow of the fabrics.

This is the illustration based ad, for a personal stylist whose identity is very well depicted in it. The choice of imagery can vary depending on your personal likings also. The campaign should be creative, appealing and must show the true essence of brand.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2414437688568954611.post-74384532590105271832011-05-24T10:44:00.000-07:002011-05-25T01:46:31.701-07:00Brochure & Flyer Designing – Tips, Construction Techniques and Design Examples
The Theme and Structure

Though graphic designing appears to be very glamorous but in real sense it is communication design. The intent and the theme must be very clear to the target audience. Using too many colors in a brochure might not be a good idea since the essence is direct communication. Use of two or three background colors with the highlighted imagery would be simple yet effective. Maintain a great flow throughout the brochure, use harmonized images or thorough repetition or create a balance. Though brochure is printed on a flat surface but create a proper grid on each panel. Give enough margin spaces to avoid clutter so viewer’s eye moves from one end to the other continuously and is able to read it properly.

Selection of Fonts

Selection of fonts is very important. Bold fonts are used for headings, easily readable fonts for rest of the copy. Font sizes are also important, neither too small nor too large. Brochure should have the quality of being read quickly. Too much copy would deviate the attention of the reader. Use bold words in copy, short clichés would be appropriate. Using image captions is a good way. Don’t use text over images unless images are being used as watermarks. Tell the reader step by step what he has to do to contact. Never forget to use company’s brief introduction and contact details.

Imagery

Imagery is the best communication. The viewer before reading the text goes through the images. This is the best part of a brochure. Use the images so appealing and communicative that they drive viewer’s brain to read the text also.

Cover

Cover is the most fighting element in the market. It should scream take me, read me in the jungle of other covers. Minimal words and most vibrant imagery is the key to success. It does not mean it should be full of clutter but being simple it should have a shelf value.

Value for Future

What elements does your brochure have so the viewer keeps it for his future reference. Is it its design or information or just because somebody liked it. Even if this is the reason atleast some time in life he might use it and contact the company. It should not be thrown in a bin or should be flown away by making an airplane of it.

Use of cut outs increases the value.

Pop out images can be an interesting way to increase the value.

On the other hand flyers are brief, simple single leaf or maybe with 2 or 3 folds. Flyers have less opportunities to be creative since they are made to reduce cost of printing and reaching out to larger masses. Same points have to be kept in mind for flyers/leaflets as discussed for brochures.

<img style="display: inline;"
